Baptism in the Holy Spirit

“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; …” Acts 1:8

Promise of the Holy Spirit is for Every Believer

Jesus told his disciples (and therefore all believers) they would need the power of the Holy Spirit to do what he had done on this earth. We would need a Helper to accomplish the mission given to us who believe, we would need to be clothed with the Holy Spirit, or what is known as the “baptism of the Holy Spirit”. This experience was in addition to the initial experience of being “born again”. In fact, this baptism was so important for the disciples that Jesus told them to wait for it, not to go out attempting to preach the gospel and heal people until they had received this baptism of power!

In fact if we follow Jesus’ pattern we see that He did not minister to people in until after the Holy
Spirit had come upon him in the form of a dove at the river Jordan when He was baptized in water by John. (John 1:29-34)

Luke 24:49 in the Message version of the Bible states what Jesus said like this: "What comes next is very important: I am sending what my Father promised to you, so stay here in the city until he  arrives, until you’re equipped with power from on high.”

What the Father promised to send was the Holy Spirit!

John 14:16 - “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with
you forever.”
V-26 - “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."

Acts 1:4-5 - Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “which,” he said, “you heard of from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy spirit not many days from now.”

V-8 - “… but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”

The word translated power is “dunamis” in Greek and means so much more than its use in our language; it is a supernatural power of heaven; a divine power given only to those who believe in the salvation of mankind through the crucifixion death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus
Christ and have been born again.  Some of the meaning of that power that Jesus and the Father want us to have:

   a.       Inherent power, power residing in a thing by virtue of its nature, or which a person or
thing exerts and puts forth.

   b.      Power for performing miracles.

   c.       Moral power and excellence of soul.

   d.      The power and influence which belong to riches and wealth.

   e.       Power and resources arising from numbers.

   f.       Power consisting in or resting upon armies, forces, hosts.

Impressive isn’t it? And there is more! Many people want the baptism of the Holy Spirit alright, but NOT TONGUES! Or the speaking of other languages (both of men and angels) by the Spirit of God. They have heard all kinds of stories about “tongue talkers” and say to themselves “no thank you
very much, I don’t need that”! And admittedly there have been misuses and even abuse of tongues, but the Truth remains the same!

In the following verses we see clearly that the initial evidence of the baptism with the Holy Spirit was the speaking in languages or tongues that were not naturally acquired by the speakers. The disciples knew that the people had received the Holy Spirit because they heard them speaking in tongues and magnifying God!

Acts 2:4 - And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 10:46 - For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God.

Acts 19:6 - And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they
spoke with tongues and prophesied.

If you want to receive this power from God you must first of all be born again! (If you are not, please refer to our teaching “How to Be Born Again”)

Next is a step that I consider very important: you must verbally (this means aloud) say and mean with all your heart: I  RENOUNCE AND REJECT SATAN AND ALL HIS WORKS!

If you have been involved in occult teaching, rituals, practices of witchcraft of any kind including tarot cards, new age doctrines, metaphysical teaching and practices, spiritism, necromancy
(contacting and speaking to the dead through mediums, etc.), horoscopes, ESP, astral projection, demonology beliefs, Satanism, Ouija board, crystal balls or crystals, - and have not yet wholeheartedly repented and renounced each you must do so now!!!

Next and again aloud declare: I SURRENDER MY LIFE TO THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS CHRIST. Now tell our Father God that you want to be baptized in the Holy Spirit and you want to speak in tongues! You may also expect one or more other indications besides “tongues” of receiving this gift from the Father – great joy, great peace, tears, laughter, and worship of God expressed in singing in tongues or dancing joyously, etc.! Just take some time to enjoy the presence of the
Holy Spirit and begin to know Him!

Praise the Lord! Let us know of your experience via e-mail!
